Meta tags are tags which can be set with html.Common meta tags are the title,description and keyword meta tags.The keyword targeted should appear one or twice in the title and three to four times in the description,once in the keywords.
Headers which are also settings used in the html tags are important and the keywords should be placed in the meta tags as they are indicate the search engine what is page is all about.
There are seven header settings and at least the first three should be consideres.

Key anchor text is also very important.The key anchot text is the clickable part in a link and the anchor text should be placed in it.

One might say ok I have done all that but still i am not ranking high for my keyword.What we said above counts for only 25% of the job.Well at least for google.Yahoo uses a lot on page seo when it decides how it ranks a site but other search engines such as GOOGLE which is the one that most want to rank for uses a lot of OFF PAGE SEO

Off page seo is linking.Yes you undestood well.Linking of sites.Google considers the amount of other website linking to you as votes.The more the sites linking to you, the better.However it is better to have a few links from authority sites than a lot of links from worthless sites.Also if the links o the site pointing to you is of the same topic the importance given to your site by the search engine is higher.
The anchor text used in the inbound link is also of great importance.
